Malice
Jan. 1976 – Dec. 1976
In January 1976, while at St Wilfrid's Comprehensive School, Marc Ceccagno formed the five-piece rock band called Malice.

- End of April 1976 the Brother of Graham left and Lol Tolhurst joined the band as the drummer.
- Around October 1976 Marc Ceccagno left to play Jazz and form the Band Amulet. Porl Thompson then joined the band as guitar player.

Easy Cure
Jan. 1977 – May 1978
The band was named after a song by Lol Tolhurst called "Easy Cure". After winning a talent contest, Easy Cure signed a recording contract with the German record company Ariola-Hansa on 18 May 1977. In September 1977, the band auditioned several singers before Robert took on the role of lead singer. In March 1978, the contract with Easy Cure was cancelled because the record company suggested the band record cover versions, which they refused.

- During March 1977, the band hired and fired vocalist Gary X and co-opted Peter O'Toole who've never sung before.
- On 12 September 1977 Peter O'Toole quit to went to a Kibbutz in Israel. Robert then decided to be the singer.
- On 3 May 1978 Porl left the band.

The Cure
May 1978 – present
After Porl left Easy Cure, the remaining three decided to change their name to The Cure. Chris Parry signed The Cure to his newly formed Fiction label in September 1978.

- Michael Dempsey left the band in November 1979 while Simon Gallup joined to replace him. In the same month also Matthieu Hartley joined the band.
- In September 1980 Matthieu Hartley left the band.
- After the concert on 11 June 1982 in Brussels, the band briefly broke up, but Robert and Lol carried on, while Simon was expelled from the band.
- In July 1983, Andy Anderson joined the band and played drums, while Lol switched to keyboards. Phil Thornalley, who had produced the album "Pornography", also joined in July 1983 and became their bass player.
- Porl Thompson rejoined the band in April 1984 for the upcoming tour, playing saxophone, guitar and additional keyboards.
- After attacking band members and staff members in a hotel in Tokyo in October 1984, Andy Anderson was sacked from the band. Phil Thornalley arranged for Vince Ely to fill in on drums for the next 11 dates of the North American tour in October & November 1984, but when Vince had to leave, Phil brought in Boris Williams, who would join The Cure for the remainder of the tour and beyond.
- At the beginning of 1985, Phil Thornalley decided to do his own thing and no longer stay with The Cure.
- Robert and Simon met again and Simon was asked to rejoin The Cure, which he did in February 1985 and went into the studio with the band to record demos for the forthcoming album.
- In 1987, Roger O'Donnell was recruited as a touring keyboardist for The Cure on the recommendation of Boris Williams. The Cure needed an additional keyboard player to supplement founding member Lol Tolhurst, who had become unreliable due to alcohol abuse. At the end of the Kissing Tour in 1987, Robert invited Roger to join The Cure as an official member.
- During the recording of the album Disintegration in 1989, Lol Tolhurst's alcoholism became so severe that the other members of the band threatened to quit. Lol was fired by Robert Smith in February 1989.
- Dissatisfied with the big stadium shows The Cure played during the 1989 tour and with personal differences between the band members, Roger O'Donnell left the band in February 1990.
- In 1990, Perry Bamonte, who had been part of The Cure's road crew since 1984 and had been Robert's guitar technician and personal assistant ever since, was promoted to full member of the band and played keyboards as well as guitar regularly.
- Porl Thompson left The Cure shortly after the 1992 Wish Tour to spend more time with his young children.
- Boris Williams left the Cure for personal reasons in 1994.
- In early 1995 Robert invited Roger O'Donnell to rejoin the band.
- In 1995 Jason Cooper responded to an ad from the Cure that said simply "Drummer wanted for international band". Jason was one of four drummers to play on the 1996 album Wild Mood Swings, but he was invited to join the band officially.
- In 2005, Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell were dismissed from the band.
- Porl Thompson rejoined The Cure in 2005 and became a member of the band for the third time.
- In 2011 Porl Thompson left the Cure again to focus on art.
- Roger O'Donnell and Lol Tolhurst joined The Cure onstage at the Sydney Opera House in May 2011. Roger then officially rejoined The Cure and became a member of the band for the third time.
- In 2012 Reeves Gabrels was invited to play as a guest during several Cure concerts. Reeves then became an official member of the Cure.
- Perry Bamonte rejoined the Cure in 2022 for the Lost World Tour, and has remained with the band.
