from the book 'Ten Imaginary Years'
"It wasn't until about the fifth or sixth date that I realised I was holding back during The Cure's set, as if that was the starters and the real thing was still to come... Before I'd go on for each set, I'd have to prepare myself in the tune-up room. It was like a schizoid thing, a different me with each band... the hardest thing to get over, a really odd sensation."
Things got a lot odder still in Newcastle on 3 October.
Robert: "It was a very peculiar night. I got into a fight in the lift with these three businessmen which carried on down the corridor. I put this bloke's head through a glass door and his two mates really did me over. "There wasn't much I could do about it. I did manage to get out at my floor with them still after me, and I pounded on Lol and Michael's door, shouting 'Help me! Help me! but, of course, they thought I waspissing about. By the time they eventually rescued me, I was really scarred. I had cuts all down the side of my head and my hand from the glass door and I feltterrible.
"I wrote virtually three-quarters of the '17 Seconds' album that night. I just stayed up for seven or eight hours and wrote because I was so unhappy. It was one of those nights when I felt filled with all the horror of the world."
