from the book 'Ten Imaginary Years'
31 May in Herford, Germany, was Simon's birthday.
Robert: "It was one of those places with a British army base and the British groups always end up entertaining the lads. They were the worst concerts we had to do. They used to take Union Jacks along and I always used to feel embarrassed about that - being on stage, you could see people were being wound up by the football songs and stuff between numbers. The four of us and Elvis were confronted by all these squaddies and, sometimes, it was like livingon a real knife edge. We knew, at some point, we'd suffer real damage because we never had a minder but, then again, we didn't want anyone with us who was a thug - it would have spoiled our fun. Most of the time it was enough for them to be confronted by this crazed Ted in full regalia taking his jacket off!"
Simon: "We did a song called 'Three' which we'd improvise around every night, and Robert decided to sing 'Happy Birthday' to me over it - it went really well. But Matthieu went absolutely mental that night. He was getting a lot of beer spat at him and he didn't have a great deal of patience at the best of times so he picked up his synth and threw it into the audience. Later, Robert and I ended up on the bathroom floor of my hotel room with a bottle of Scotch. We woke up in the bathroom too - good night that!
