(...) I remember the surreal feeling of stepping into Fountain Studios in Wembley (Now a McDonalds) on that cold January in 1991. It was the kind of evening that feels alive with anticipation, the air electric as music fans buzzed about what was about to happen. This wasn't just any gig—it was The Cure, stripped back and unplugged, something that felt almost intimate for a band known for their lush, layered soundscapes.
The lights were dim, casting a soft glow on the small stage where the band's setup waited, scattered with acoustic guitars, a baby grand piano, and unusual percussive instruments. The eclectic, almost whimsical arrangement mirrored the essence of The Cure playful yet deeply emotive.
When Robert Smith walked onto the stage with his iconic wild hair and smudged eyeliner, the crowd broke into a very quiet cheer, trying to stay respectful of the recording. He gave a shy smile, that awkward charm of his, and then they started.
Between songs, Robert mumbled in his endearingly awkward way, sharing snippets of insight about the tracks. At one point looking over towards my side of the room for some sort of acknowledgement on how the songs were sounding to us the audience. The band's chemistry shone as they laughed together, seemingly enjoying the laid-back nature of the session. It felt like a glimpse behind the curtain. (...)
