At the time, I'd been working for the IATSE out of Silver Spring, MD, as a non-card holding stagehand. Though I did not work that particular show, I did have tickets to it, being a huge fan, and so managed to get backstage passes because of my affiliation with the union. Just prior to the band going on stage, they were collected together talking at the stage entrance backstage. I walked over to the group, and Robert Smith saw me just before I joined their circle. At which point, he bent at the waist, and screamed at the floor. I think he thought I was going to tell them to move or something and he was kind of pissed.
When he stood back up, I told Robert I thought The Cure was awesome, and I had everything they had ever done. I held out my hand and he shook it and smiled. He seem pleased to see this long haired creature shaking his hand loved him. After the show I'm told Robert Smith had been looking for me, but I had already gone. I had one of the thrills of my life in just meeting him, the show was awesome, and besides we had ridden our motorcycles to the show and were trying to beat the weather home.
Was I disappointed when I heard. Absolutely! But, I was also touched that he would even remember or bother to look for me. It makes for a great memory, and an incredible story. It's a moment in time I will never forget.
