from the book 'Ten Imaginary Years'
While recording, The Cure took time out to appear on French television, miming to 'Boys Don't Cry' and creating a stir by appearing in frocks and make-up.
Robert: "I've never tried to capitalise on an image. At the French concerts, an inordinate amount of people arrived dressed in black despite the fact that the group never likes wearing black, it's just a myth that's arisen. It's equally as difficult trying to escape the quirky corner. That's why I cut off my hair when we went to America, because I wanted the group to be far more sullen and aggressive than people were expecting. I wanted to look stark and it was a crucial calculation because, once I see adjectives like 'cuddly' appearing about me, I think 'This is going to fuck whatever we try to do next'. I mean, if a magazine says 'Wouldn't you like to take him home?', it destroys me when I'm next in the studio wanting to sing something that means something."
from Olivier
It was originally aired on Antenne 2 on October 4th, 1986 and shot at the Pavillon Baltard in Nogent-sur-Marne probably a few days before.
Note: This information about Pavillon Baltard seems to be wrong. Champs-Élysées was usually filmed at Studio Gabriel in Paris. Footage of other artists who performed at the Champs-Élysées show in 1986 shows them arriving outside Studio Gabriel and performing in the same hall as The Cure here. So it seems very unlikely that the TV show was filmed in the Pavillon Baltard.
Can anyone confirm?
