The books 'Ten Imaginary Years' and 'A Visual Documentary' both report that the concert on 5 June 1980 at Lyon University was cancelled after the band got lost in the mountains on their way to the venue.
However, since the concerts in Vaulx-en-Velin (near Lyon) on 4 June 1980 and in Paris on 5 June 1980 both took place, it is more likely that the date given in the books is incorrect and that the story about the cancelled concert in Lyon took place in 1979, when the concert in Vaulx-en-Velin (near Lyon) on 19 December 1979 was cancelled. Among other things, because the report in the book 'Ten Imaginary Years' mentions that The Cure got lost in the mountains in the snow, which is more likely to have happened in December than in June.
from the book 'Ten Imaginary Years'
On 5 June, The Cure were supposed to play Lyon University.
Lol: "We got lost and found ourselves somewhere in the mountains in the snow. We kept having to stop to fill up the radiator. When we eventually got to Lyon, it was midnight so we left the van with everything in it and took a taxi to the University. The organisers had sent the crowd home - 800 people - and at first they didn't want to let us sleep on the campus as arranged. So Matthieu got mad."
Robert: "I was sharing a room with him and he went outside, uprooted a tree and tried to knock down Lol and Simon's door because he wanted a light for his cigarette. Lol and Simon were terrified - they thought he'd killed me. Matthieu eventually came back and went to bed. He woke up covered in blood and bits of wood."
Lol: "The next day, we left discreetly but it was impossible to find the van. The police had impounded it and the pound was shut so we had to take the train to play in Belgium. We wore the same clothes for the next 10 days and borrowed all our instruments. At one gig the synth that someone'd lent Matthieu started playing its memory sequences in mid concert so he threw it into the drums. No one came near us because we smelled so bad."
