from Gwyneth:
know for certian that the Pixies were the supporting act for the Cure on the prayer tour in September 89 at Mansfield Ma.
I was at the show on Sep 23rd 1989. Yes, I know for sure. We were backstage with them after the show. I met frank black that night. SO, yes it was them.
from Matthew B.:
I was at this show, and I was a huge Pixies fan, but there was only one opening act and it was Shelleyan Orphan.
The Pixies opened for Love & Rockets at Mansfield (Great Woods) 6 days later. (See
baileyswalk.com/live/1989)
They played with the Cure earlier that month and the month prior when Love and Rockets was also on the venue. I'm not surprised to hear that they were backstage, but they did not play at the show itself. I was there and saw it with my own eyes. It seems that the Love and Rockets went their own way and the Pixies followed then instead of the Cure.
This was supposed to be the last Cure show ever (the most definite suggestion of ending it up to that point).
I do distinctly remember Shelleyan Orphan though, and how the singer came back for the final Cure encore. I bought my first Pixies album because of this show. I liked the opening band. Someone told me it was the Pixies, and I bought their album Doolittle, but there was absolutely no question that it was not the Pixies after about 5 seconds of listening to it (totally different sounds). I then found out that it was actually Shelleyan Orphan. There's a big difference as Shelleyan Orphan had a female lead singer, and Kim Deal of the Pixies would only sing Gigantic at that time while Black Francis did all of the other lead singing. I also remember the flower logo that Shelleyan Orphan had up as a backdrop, and it turns out that this was the album picture from Century Flower that they released that year.
I saw the Pixies probably 8 times live in the early 1990's, so I'm absolutely positive that I'm not mistaken.
from Mike B.:
I was at this show and I can say with 100% certainty that The Pixies did NOT play. They were on tour with Love and Rockets at the time and either played the previous or next weekend at Great Woods. I went to both shows.
